The team will consider several factors to create accommodations, including: evidence of need, best practice, physician/clinician recommendations, developmental appropriateness, school wide norms/rules, feasibility, the student’s ability to self-advocate, etc. The goal is to make sure every student with a disability can fully participate in school. So they will often tell you about any changes, even if it’s not required by law. A decision is made to remove a Section 504-qualified student from school for more. Most schools realize that keeping parents out of the loop isn’t best practice. The 504 Plan includes accommodations, modifications, and/or services. It only has to tell you about major things, like if your child is being evaluated. ![]() Because these plans are specific to each student, there is no list of available accommodations. Legally, the school doesn’t have to tell you about small changes to your child’s 504 plan. Once the team determines a student is eligible for Section 504 and accommodations are needed, the team will work together to create accommodations that ensure the student has access to instruction at the same level as his or her non-disabled peers. Your child may be eligible for accommodations under a 504 Plan if he or she has a physical or mental health disability that limits one or more major life.
